Picking the right genre is crucial for a song’s discoverability on cXc Music. Users prefer to search for Genre before mood or format.

Genre is new consideration for each track. Even if the artist is known for one genre, they can make songs of many different genres. Think of Childish Gambino.

Let’s look at some situations:

When you are posting music you didn’t create, you should take extra care to make sure you are posting to the right genre for the song.

One suggestion is to check the Soundcloud account of the artist and find the genre tagged on the track like this example below.

When you have a song that fits multiple genres, or one that doesn’t fit exactly, the worst thing you can do is pick nothing. Picking “I ain’t got no type” will exclude you from all results.

Instead, think about the closest match. You may also consider the fan who would like this music. Choose what a listener would most closely associate it with.

If you can’t choose between two genres, Fusion, which is a combination of genres, may be your best bet.

Hip Hop / Rap RNB. Encompases all spectrums of hip hop and r&b that is not blues or soul.

Reggaeton is for all reggaeton, a type of modern latin dance music.

EDM. Encompasses all music made primarily with synthesizers or dance with electronic components. 

Rock / Metal. Includes everything from classic rock to soft rock to heavy metal.

Reggae. Music started in Jamaica and was influenced by Ska, Jazz, and RnB.

Folk / World. Music includes eclectic and indigenous music from all over the world, and music made by nature. 

Jazz music is a free flowing style started in America, and all sub genres of Jazz are welcome here.

Fusion is a combination of two or more genres.

Conscious / Aquarian Age can include meditation tracks, pure healing tones, or any music with a spiritual message that doesn’t fit perfectly into another genre.

Pop music is always changing, but should be used for what is considered pop at the time the music was created. When there is a more accurate genre, use that instead. 

Classical / Orchestra – Orchestras, strings, music from the classical period all fall under this category.

Blues / Soul – Blues and soul is music with a lot of heart, sometimes mixed with lament.
